Frequently
Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about sedation dentistry.
What sedation options are available?
We offer nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") for mild, fast-acting relaxation and oral conscious sedation — a pill taken beforehand — for deeper relaxation during longer or more complex procedures.
Is nitrous oxide safe?
Yes — it's one of the safest sedatives used in dentistry. It takes effect quickly, wears off within minutes of removing the mask, and it's safe to drive yourself home afterward.
Will I be unconscious during oral sedation?
No — oral conscious sedation keeps you awake and responsive, but deeply relaxed. Because the medication can make you drowsy for several hours, you'll need a driver to bring you to and from your appointment.
Who benefits most from sedation dentistry?
Patients with dental phobia, a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, or those needing several procedures completed in one longer visit tend to benefit the most from sedation.
Will I feel pain during a sedated procedure?
Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area — sedation calms anxiety and discomfort, it doesn't replace numbing. You should feel relaxed and comfortable throughout.
Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?
Coverage for sedation varies by plan and is often tied to medical necessity. We confirm your specific benefits and bill directly before your appointment so there are no surprises.
