Frequently
Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about dental crowns.
When do I need a dental crown?
A crown is recommended when a tooth is cracked, severely decayed, weakened after a root canal, or broken in a way that a filling cannot fully restore. Crowns are also used to anchor a dental bridge or to protect a tooth at high risk of fracture.
How long does a dental crown last?
With proper care — regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings — a dental crown can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Avoiding biting hard objects (ice, hard candy, nails) and wearing a nightguard if you grind your teeth will significantly extend its lifespan.
How many appointments does getting a crown take?
A traditional crown takes two visits: one for preparation and a temporary crown, and a second to bond the permanent crown. At your first appointment we take digital impressions so the permanent crown is precision-fabricated by our dental lab.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic so you shouldn't feel pain. Some sensitivity around the prepared tooth and gumline is normal for a few days after each appointment. Over-the-counter pain relief is typically all that's needed.
Does insurance cover dental crowns?
Most Canadian dental insurance plans cover a portion of crown costs when the crown is medically necessary (due to decay, fracture, or post-root-canal restoration). We directly bill all major insurers and will confirm your coverage before treatment begins.
What type of crown material do you use?
We offer porcelain, zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns depending on the tooth location and patient preference. For back teeth, strength is prioritised; for front teeth, aesthetics. Dr. Pisanu or Dr. Kooner will recommend the best material for your situation.
