Frequently
Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about dental cleanings.
How often should I get a professional cleaning?
Most adults benefit from a professional cleaning every six months. Patients with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar buildup, or certain medical conditions may benefit from cleanings every three to four months. Your hygienist will recommend the right frequency for you.
What is the difference between a routine cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is used when gum disease is present — it removes deposits from deeper below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces to promote healing.
Does a professional cleaning hurt?
Most patients find routine cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive gums or significant buildup, you may feel some pressure or mild discomfort. For deep cleanings, we use local anaesthetic to keep you completely comfortable throughout the procedure.
Does insurance cover dental cleanings?
Yes — most Canadian dental insurance plans fully cover two routine cleanings per year. We directly bill all major insurers, as well as the CDCP. We confirm your benefits before your appointment.
Why can't I just brush and floss at home?
Home care is essential, but it can't remove calcified tartar — only professional instruments can. Tartar harbours bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay. Regular professional cleanings complement your home routine to prevent problems your toothbrush cannot reach.
Do you offer cleanings for children?
Yes — we provide gentle, age-appropriate cleanings for children from their first tooth. Our hygienists are experienced at making children feel comfortable and teaching them proper brushing and flossing techniques in a way that sticks.
