Frequently
Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about inlays and onlays.
What's the difference between an inlay and an onlay?
An inlay fits within the cusps on the chewing surface of a tooth, filling the area where decay or damage has been removed. An onlay is more extensive, extending over one or more of the tooth's cusps when the damage covers a larger area.
How is this different from a filling or a crown?
Inlays and onlays are used when tooth damage or decay is too extensive for a standard filling but doesn't require the full coverage of a crown. They preserve more of your natural, healthy tooth structure than a crown while providing a stronger, more durable repair than a large filling.
What material are inlays and onlays made from?
We use tooth-coloured porcelain or composite material, selected based on the location of the tooth, the size of the restoration, and how much chewing force the area will need to withstand.
How many visits does this take?
Typically two visits. At the first visit, we prepare the tooth, take digital impressions, and place a temporary restoration. At the second visit, your custom inlay or onlay is bonded into place and checked for fit and bite.
How long do inlays and onlays last?
With good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, bonded porcelain or composite inlays and onlays can last many years of everyday chewing and function.
Will it match the colour of my other teeth?
Yes — both porcelain and composite inlays and onlays are tooth-coloured and shade-matched to blend naturally with the rest of your smile, unlike traditional metal restorations.
