Frequently
Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about restorative dentistry.
What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry covers any treatment that repairs or replaces damaged, decayed, or missing teeth — including fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, and dental implants. The goal is to restore full chewing function, protect your remaining natural teeth, and give you a healthy, natural-looking smile.
How do I know which restorative option is right for me?
It depends on how much natural tooth structure remains and whether the tooth is missing entirely. Minor decay is typically treated with a filling, a cracked or weakened tooth with a crown, and missing teeth with an implant, bridge, or denture. Dr. Pisanu or Dr. Kooner will recommend the best option after a full exam and X-rays.
Is restorative dental treatment painful?
No — restorative procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. Mild soreness or sensitivity for a day or two afterward is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
How long do restorative treatments last?
It varies by treatment: fillings typically last 5–10 years, crowns 10–15 years, bridges 10–15 years, dentures 5–10 years before relining or replacement, and dental implants can last a lifetime with good care. Regular checkups help us catch and address wear early.
Does insurance cover restorative dentistry?
Most Canadian dental insurance plans cover a portion of medically necessary restorative treatment, such as fillings, crowns, and bridges. Coverage for implants and dentures varies by plan. We directly bill all major insurers and confirm your coverage before treatment begins.
What happens if I ignore a damaged or missing tooth?
Untreated decay or damage tends to worsen, often leading to infection, pain, or tooth loss. A missing tooth left unreplaced can also cause the jawbone to shrink and neighbouring teeth to shift, making future treatment more complex. Early restorative care is almost always simpler and more affordable.
