Learn what to expect before, during, and after a dental exam at our Vancouver clinic, including step-by-step details, insurance tips, and how we keep every visit comfortable and clear.
A dental exam at our Vancouver clinic is designed to be thorough, comfortable, and patient-focused, supporting every patient from their first visit through to ongoing care. Our warm team is here for families, adults, children, and seniors at every stage, emphasizing clear communication and personal attention at each step of your dental health journey.
What Does a Dental Exam Include?
Every dental exam includes a full visual inspection of your teeth, gums, and bite, along with low-radiation digital X-rays, a gum pocket depth assessment, and an oral cancer screening of the soft tissues. Our dentists,. Gianni Pisanu and. Pavan Kooner, perform each exam, ensuring every detail is checked and explained in plain language, so you always know what to expect.
Recommended Frequency for Dental Exams
For most adults, we recommend a dental exam and a professional cleaning every six months. Some patients, including those with gum disease history or specific medical concerns, may benefit from more frequent visits.
Booking Your Dental Exam: Who Can Book and How?
We are currently accepting new patients for dental exams at our Vancouver (Marpole) location, no referral needed. Booking is simple: you can schedule your appointment online or by calling us directly at 604-261-8164. New patient appointments usually take 60–90 minutes to allow plenty of time for your comprehensive exam and X-rays.
Preparing For Your Visit: What To Bring and Expect
Before your appointment, brush and floss as usual, bring your insurance card, ID, and a list of any medications you take. If you are a new patient, please arrive 10 minutes early. Note any pain, tooth sensitivity, or concerns to mention so we can address them carefully. When you arrive, our team will greet you and review your completed forms to save time.
During Your Dental Exam
During your visit, we will take full-mouth digital X-rays and perform a comprehensive periodontal (gum) health screening, as well as assess your bite and jaw for proper alignment and function. Every checkup includes a standard oral cancer screening, with our dentists checking your soft tissues for early warning signs. We explain all findings clearly, discuss your personalized oral care plan, and answer any questions you may have.
If any treatments or further steps are needed, all options and next steps are discussed transparently before proceeding, nothing is started without your understanding and consent.
Dental exams are non-invasive and designed for comfort, with gentle evaluation and no rushing.
Dental Exams for Families, Children, and Patients With Anxiety
Our clinic is welcoming for patients of all ages, and we offer the option to schedule family appointments back-to-back when possible. For children, we provide gentle, age-appropriate exams, including brushing and flossing coaching and positive explanations. If you have dental anxiety, let us know when booking; we are trained to help you feel safe and will discuss sedation options if you wish.
After Your Dental Exam: Next Steps & Care
After your exam and cleaning, we recommend avoiding eating or drinking for about 30 minutes, particularly if you have received a fluoride treatment. We provide a clear oral care plan to follow at home, and we always encourage you to call with any questions after your visit.
Most routine dental exams are fully covered by dental insurance. We accept all insurance plans and bill all providers directly, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), so you can focus on your care without paperwork. Our team confirms your coverage and benefits before your visit, so there are no surprises. As a thank you, adult new patients who come in for a checkup, X-ray, and cleaning receive a free $50 Amazon gift card.
